What is a Lead Magnet and why do you need them?

Ever heard of a Lead Magnet but not sure what it’s all about? In terms of Marketing – generating Leads is one at the top of the list. After all, without leads, where will you get your customers?

A Lead Magnet does exactly that. Something that will attract your potential customers, or Leads. In order to attract and inspire, Lead Magnets need to offer something valuable for free, in exchange for personal information, most commonly an email address. Lead Magnets are becoming increasingly popular in the digital age, as customers demand more instant satisfaction. They are a great way to build up your email list with people who are interested in your business, and these people are the best targets to convert into actual sales.

Why Use a Lead Magnet?

In a world of digital connectivity and information overload, most people don’t spend much time on websites, let alone making a purchase. Most visitors to your website will likely be just browsing or researching, before deciding on what to do next. This is the time when you need to offer a Lead Magnet to ask these visitors to ‘keep in touch’, even if they’re just looking. Your aim is to build relationship and trust, and in turn convert them into customers.

What is a good Lead Magnet to offer?

Your free Lead Magnet should be something useful, valuable, and relevant so that your visitors are willing to submit an email address in exchange. Just because you’re offering something free doesn’t mean it can’t be good quality! In fact, you should try to solve a problem for your visitor with the lead magnet. For example, think about why someone is looking at your website. If your business is a music store, you might offer an eBook about “Guide to Selecting and Buying a Guitar”. Or you might offer a Video about musical instrument maintenance. Your visitors are curious and want to find out more, most importantly, they need help! Think about what they need help with, and create your Lead Magnet based on providing a solution.

Using Lead Magnets can also set yourself apart from your competitors as an industry expert or thought leader. As you provide valuable information over time by communicating through the email list, leads convert into sales. You’re one step closer when you earn that email address.
